For a long time I’ve had a photo section on my site. Initially, I wrote the code that just searched through a directory structure for pictures that I had stuck in there. This worked fine for what I initially wanted, but didn’t scale well. Plus, it was quite slow. At the time, this stressed my PHP abilities and so I searched for better solutions. What I found was the open source Gallery. This solution worked well for me for the past several years. Since when I was hosted on Berkeley’s OCF servers to today’s more robust hosting with my own domain name.

DSC_2878

However, I’ve just begun to realize that this solution is no longer viable for me. I’ve realized that my flickr and facebook accounts give me a much greater visibility in a much more social environment. In addition, the point of me having photos on my site was to share them family and friends. At this point now, I would have to post pictures in three places. And since each place has different privacy controls, I couldn’t just post the same pictures to each place.

All this so far is just to say that I’ve decided to leverage the power of WordPress, and install the FAlbum plugin. So now all the pictures on my site are from my flickr account, which will allow me to more easily manage them. With this change, photos.chrisstreeter.com is now deprecated and has started pointing at the new location of my photos. FAlbum lets you view the photos just fine embedded in my site, but one will have to go to flickr in order to comment on them, which I encourage people to do. As you can see above, I can also now embed pictures from my album into my posts really easily, which is something else I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time. All in all, I think this is a great change.

Recently, I happened to be going through various boxes at my apartment, and came across something unusual. I happened across a MiniDV cassette. Now, since I do not own a video camera, I had to think a bit about why I had this tape. Then I had a realization. This could be the lost tape from 2002. The fabled tape with the raw footage from my LOP Posse movie I made with Matt Lynch and Amanda Sparks. I haven’t been able to find anything from that movie except for the Final Cut Pro project that has been taking up disk space for so long. So now I had a cassette with what I assumed to be the raw footage on it.

Many weeks/months passed by without me doing anything. Then, this past weekend, while at my parents’ house, my mom asked me to go through a box of my old stuff and pick out what I wanted. Well, inside the box I found a VHS tape marked SNL. Now, I used to be a master at scheduling things to record late at night on our VHS (this was before the age of Tivo…), and did actually record SNL episodes on tapes. But I had a hunch this tape’s SNL contents had been overwritten and the tape now contained the fabled movie from 2002. Upon viewing the tape, my hunch was proved correct. In addition, I was given an additional surprise. Another movie I had written, starred and edited was on the tape, Loo$e Change. I had made the second movie with Dean Eckles back during High School where we had gone to a week long summer camp at Stanfurd. This discovery sparked me into action.

Upon arriving home, I proceeded to borrow a MiniDV camera and examine what was on the MiniDV cassette, once and for all. And as I had guessed, it contained the raw footage. A couple hours later, all the footage had been recaptured and I was relinking all the media tin my project. A short while later and the LOP Posse movie was exported to a .mp4. Since it is 2007, the only correct thing to do at this point would be to upload the video to YouTube. Which I proceeded to do. I give you: The LOP Posse. Enjoy.

Wow. So Attorney General Gonzales is proposing new legislation that will change how copyright infringement is defined. Current laws state that there has to be infringement that takes place, and the new legislation proposes removing the actual infringement part of the law. In addition there would be added penalties for “intended” copyright crimes. There’s more at the original news.com article.

So yeah. I really hope that this ridiculousness doesn’t make it very far.
